Born on May 10, 1945, in Champaign, Illinois, he served as a combat photographer with the 1st Infantry Division of the American Army during the Vietnam War, earning the Bronze Star Medal for his service. He obtained a BA in Communications from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1968 and an MA in Communications from the University of Missouri in 1971.
William Geist began his career in 1972 as a writer and columnist for the Suburban Trib division of the Chicago Tribune. He later wrote a twice-weekly column titled “About New York” for The New York Times from 1980 to 1987.
